Beerd, George St
Previously a Greene King pub, this Victorian pub underwent a huge refit by current owners Bath Ales when it was The Grapes. But now, gone are the theatre posters on the walls and ceilings (it’s located directly opposite the New Theatre) and the claustrophobic and outdated looking bar from GK days, and has now (Sept. 2015) been transformed into “Beerd”.
This is now a true “craft beer bar” – really the first (and at time of writing, the only one) of it’s kind in Oxford (though the University Club has been stocking a good range of craft beers for sole time). There’s a wide frequently changing range of beers on cask and keg, as well as food (pizza being one of the major offerings). Traditional it isn’t, and it won’t be to everyone’s liking, but it’s certainly something new and different for Oxford, and perhaps a shot in the arm for the beer scene in the city – time will see how popular it will be, but Bath Ales have certainly pipped Brewdog and Craft Beer Co. in getting Beerd open before they have a presence in the city.
